Episode 5- Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em

Well this Quickfire is a first!!!! Wow! Good thing they were able to figure it out!!!

Sheldon is cracking me up- just watching Brooke and doing what she does! Jamie and Silvia have never made biscuits either? And Shirley too... I don't really understand how you can plan to be on Top Chef IN CHARLESTON and not practice making biscuits! I would have a recipe memorized!!!

Some looked better than others, that's for sure! I am seriously craving biceps now though. We should do Denver Biscuit Company soon!

On the bottom were Shirley, Sheldon and Jim! Shocked that Jim did bad!

On top we have Brooke, Kasuji and Jamie! The Best Biscuit was Brooke!

Elimination Challenge is Whole Hog BBQ plus 3 sides!!! They split into 3 teams:

Red: Shirley, Casey, Jim and Jamie
Green: Katsuji, Silvia, Sylva and Amanda
Yellow: Brooke, Sheldon, John and Emily

Poor Sheldon- I really hope he can return. I've dealt with back pain though and it will knock you out hard!

I would need to try the BBQ, but I think I would prefer the vinegar over the mustard. I like sweet and tangy BBQ with a smokey flavor! I have a feeling Sheldon makes a killer Hawaiian BBQ! There are SO many ways to BBQ- this is a really fun challenge, and a LONG night!

Each team seems to be struggling somewhere... This is not an easy challenge!

Yellow Team gets visited first! The judges love the Sauce and Pork, but the Beans are not done. The Mac&Cheese worked and the Slaw went over really well too! Overall they did a good job!

Red Team was up next! The Sauce is falling rather flat, but brings out the Pork more. The Hash and Cabbage went over REALLY well. They're the only team with a Pickle!

Finally Green Team! The Beans were off... too sour maybe from the weird gland in the Pithy probably used? The Potato Salad is not "normal", but not bad. The Pork and Sauce missed the mark as well as the Slaw. Overall this was not a cohesive American BBQ, it was Asian and Italian and Sour. I think this team is in trouble! I also do not remember Katsuji being such an ass in the past... was he always like this?

There was a clear winner- the Yellow Team!!! Wow, even with undercooked beans, they still crushed it! The winning chef is John! Wow!

Of course the Green team is on the bottom. The Beans were too sour, the hoisin added to the BBQ was too sweet. Potato Salad without mayo gave it a weird texture and didn't work with the whole meal. In the end it's Silvia packing her knives. Birthday Curse strikes AGAIN!!!

Yes her potato salad was not great, but I honestly think that Katsuji should have been eliminated. She made something that was true to herself and her heritage, Katsuji used parts of the pig that ruined his basic beans. He did not take a risk, he messed up something that should have been a slam dunk for him.

  1. Le Chefre narrowly escaped that last episode with 3 of the 4 chefs on the losing team.

The question is: Did we want to keep all our players?

I'm ambivalent about losing Amanda at this point. She's capable of pulling off a top dish but it's probably more likely she will put up something in the bottom.

Nice week for Pickely picking up points and re-taking the lead.

I thought Le Chefre's record of -25 for a season would never be beaten and I still think that. But Doug and Bri have a chance to finish in the negative. Do you really want to join Le Chefre on that page in the BOCO Top Chef Fantasy Pool record book? No, you do not.

John Tesar is a dark horse to win the season. What a comeback from being in the first sudden death QF.
