Episode 12- Wok This Way

Cantonese Quickfire! Create your own Chop Suey! If you're like me- you're not sure what Chop Suey really is, so to clarify, it is a dish consisting of meat (often chicken, fish, beef, prawns, or pork) and eggs, cooked quickly with vegetables such as bean sprouts, cabbage and celery and bound in a starch-thickened sauce. It is typically served with rice but can become the Chinese-American form of chow mein with the addition of stir-fried noodles. Oh! I like Chop Suey!!!

Jeremy's crab looked really good to me! Marjorie's Lobster looked like a picture from a chinese food wall. Carl's Lobster and Scallops were overcooked. Amar's Pork was good with the addition of fried rice! Isaac's Genral Toas Chicken was too starchy. Kwame's Beef looked good, but was a bit oily.

On bottom: Carl, Kwame and Isaac

On top: Jeremy, Marjorie and Amar

And the winner is after a commercial- annoying, I hate when they do that!

Fan Favorite competition is going on- the top 8 are Amar, Carl, Chad, Isaac, Jeremy, Karn, Kwame and Marjoie. I like Kwame- he can cook and has an interesting personality. Isaac is a big personality, but maybe too big? I can see him having his own Food Network show honestly. Of course I also like Amar- no bias there, haha!

And the winner is Marjorie!

Elimination Challenge: Think of a fast casual concept that can work in any market- create a dish based on that concept for 150 diners, also come up with a fill menu to complete the restaurant. But wait for it... they get help from the past chefs! Marjorie gets to choose her helper first! She chooses Angelina- WTF!?!?!?!?!?!?! I am SHOCKED she did not pick Karen? I thought they were buds! I wonder what Karen thinks of that move? She also gets to pick chefs for her other competitors, and she is out for blood!
Jeremy gets Jason, Carl gets Chad, Amar gets Karen, Isaac with Wesley, and Kwame with Phillip- ouch!

I really think this is a fun challenge- in fact this would be a fun one to do with each other! Does that make me weird? :)

Is Kwame seriously using frozen mini-waffles? Dude- that is either the kiss of death, or the biggest risk that makes it through in the history of Top Chef! If the rest of his menu and restart concept is based on variations of waffles, how does that work? Marjorie's concept does not seem that impressive. Out of all the concepts, it's my least favorite. Amar's Chicken and Isaac's Gumbo is new and fresh. Jeremy's tacos will have to be amazeballs, but who doesn't love a good taco? Carl's Mediterranean is not really "new" *cough* Garbanzos and Daphne's *cough*

The judges liked Carl's concept- based of the mexican model that has proven success. He also executed his dish well!

Issac's concept went over well with the judges too. It is family friendly and bold with flavor!

Kwame's waffles were too small and I can tell the judges were not happy with the fact he didn't make the waffles himself.

The judges felt that Marjorie's concept works really well but they didn't really seem to love her dish.

Jeremy's Taco Dudes is "different" because it serves beer from hot chicks and has a garden? Yeah, the concept is weak and the execution of the dish was not good.

Amar's rotisserie chicken concept wasn't sold well, but the dish was great, and overall it has potential!

Overall everyone did try and embraced the concept really well.

The two that did the best were Marjorie and Carl. And the winner with the best overall concept and food is Carl, who also won over the diners! Go team Bug!

On the bottom- no surprise here, Kwame and Jeremy. They both kinda phoned in their food. Concepts were not bad, but food didn't work. Sad news for le'Chefre- the chef going home is Kwame! Maybe he'll get back in LCK?

  1. Exactly what I said when I saw Kwame was planning to do frozen waffles. Kiss of death. So dumb! C'mon man!

What looked to be a runaway season for Le Chefre is now very dicey. We need Jeremy to get back on track heading into the homestretch.

  2. Some big point swings the last couple weeks. This race is looking a lot closer than a few weeks ago. Especially if you've been watching LCK. I think I'm an episode ahead of this recap, so I won't go too much further, but the finale should be at least a little exciting. Which is always fun!
