Episode 3: Keep on Truckin'

Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson from Frasca is the guest judge for the QuickFire today! (Of course Bruce knows him...)
The QuickFire is a deconstructed Denver Omelette and it's SUDDEN DEATH! The 3 Chefs that make the worse dish will have to cook again to save their skin!

I am surprised by how many people decided to do breakfasty foods...

Favorite Dishes were Carrie, Brother and Tu- and the winner is Brother. He was super creative with his dish, looked great!

The least favorite dishes were Tanya, Laura and Rogelio...  They have to make a perfect French Omelette in 15 mins! They are ALL a mess!!! Holy Hell! I expected Rogelio to be bad, but I thought Laura and Tanya were better than that. None of them did a real French Omelette... but the least favorite overall was Laura. I had higher expectations for sure...

Elimination Challenge is with guest judge Hosea Rosenberg! (BTW: What empire came from his food truck? He has 2 restaurants and Santo just opened...) They will break into 4 teams of 3 and come up with a cohesive 3 item menu to feed college kids! I am so mad we didn't know about this and crash it!
Teams-
Black: Carrie, Tanya and Joseph
Blue: Tu, Chris and Adrienne
Yellow: Fatima, Joe and Tyler
Green: Rogelio, Brother and Bruce

Considering they're in Boulder- I wonder if there is a market for more hippie/healthy food, gluten free, vegan, paleo etc... They are college kids, but still... All the food sounds good to me!

It's kinda bullshit that they're having so many issues with the trucks. That is my biggest peeve with cooking shows- it should be about the cooking and the time, not faulty equipment... there should be people on hand to fix issues like that.

Yellow- Soup is good, Wings are good, Waffle is good. They all did a great job with their dishes!
Blue- Fried Fish is not great a bit dry, Chopped Cheese is flavorful but not amazing, Banh Mi is missing flavor- overall they're all too bready
Black- Burger is dripping down their chins and is great, Chicken and Waffles are great, Rib is alright. They have good portions overall!
Green- Corn salad is odd and has no flavor, Pork Sandwich is greasy, Fry-bread is stale and sandy...

The team with the most students and is safe is the Black team: Down the Chin! But the winning team is the Yellow team: Hangover Cure. They all did a great job but the winning dish is Joe's wings!!!

On the bottom are the Green: Foodgasim and Blue: Blazing Sammies... neither conceptualized their truck's overall menus enough. Green team didn't have anything that was good... so they are on the bottom.
And it's Rogelio heading home... not a surprise.

  1. Le Chevre off to a strong start that could have gone horribly wrong if the Blazin' Sammies had ended up on bottom (2 from Chevre on that team).

Unfortunate for Pickely to lose Laura so early but maybe a blessing in disguise given how she looked in the QFs. It was obvious she could cook and had a great pedigree but she seemed to get flustered in the Top Chef environment. She seemed like a nice person and next time I'm in Alaska I'll check out her restaurant.

Bug making an early statement that Brother Luck as the #1 pick may have been the way to go when he wins the first QF after our draft. I need a bit more convincing.

I was a little disappointed in the deconstructed Denver omelettes but I guess the chefs weren't really given much time. I wonder what Michael Voltaggio would have done though?

The inability of the 3 chefs in the sudden death QF to make a French omelette, or even know what it is, was shocking. 2 of them are now gone. Watch out Tanya.

The social media guru guy was super fcking annoying. How does this person have 11 million followers? He does get me to give a small chuckle when he describes himself as cute and useless. The judges barely crack a smile.

Michal pointed out that it looked like the event was held at Chautauqua and not on CU's campus. Interesting.

It's a lot of fun to see all the Colorado locations and local chefs. Always excited for Top Chef but even more so this season. It looks like there is going to be a strong top 6 or 7 left.

I want to mention that I offered to trade Pickely (pre episode - not sure if allowed anyway) Tyler for Joe F. That way we would both have had our top 2 picks. They declined. Time will tell...

  2. For the food truck challenge they definitely showed some footage from the based of Chautauqua, but thats not where the trucks were actually set up for the challenge. I was trying to figure out where it was. I think it was a part over in the Tantra neighborhood where I used to live in south Boulder. Or it could have been at east Boulder rec center. It definitely didn't look like anything on campus.

Also, that social media dude just got in trouble for posting a video where he and his buddies went to the "Suicide Forest" in Japan. The problem was they actually found a recently deceased person hanging from a tree. He posted the video and only blurred the person's face. He did post up a suicide hotline number at the end of his video, but only after asking for people to subscribe to his channel. The media has not been kind to him since and he took the video down (after several million views) posted an apology video, and maybe even said he is walking away from social media for a while. I think his name is Logan Paul.
